Ultrasonographic Evaluation of the Neonatal Brain in Cases of Birth Asphyxia

چکیده
INTRODUCTION The manifestations of hypoxic and ischemic injury to the brain in a developing foetus in utero or during the birth process consist of a pattern of abnormal neurological signs occurring in sequence over a period of the first few days of life. This is known as hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) [1]. HIE occurs in about 25% infants following severe birth asphyxia [2]. A clinical staging system has been described in the Sarnat staging system [3] [Table/Fig-1]. A clinical diagnosis of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy automatically initiates a search for the anatomical location and extent of the brain lesions and a follow up of their progress over the next few weeks. This helps the clinician to formulate a line of management for the affected neonate and form some idea of the short and long term prognosis for the affected child.

Comparison between serum magnesium levels of asphyxiated neonates and normal cases
Background: Asphyxia is one the most important causes of neonatal mortality and morbidity. It is suggested that magnesium may have a protective role against cellular damage during hypoxic brain insult, or change effect post-asphyxia consequences. Our study was performed for comparison of serum magnesium in neonates with and without asphyxia. Methods: This study was done in Neona...
متن کاملUltrasonographic examination of the normal caprine neonatal brain
Ultrasonography is a safe, rapid, and non-invasive diagnostic tool that has been previously used for imaging infants and canine neonatal brains. The purpose of the present study was to describe the ultrasonographic appearance of the brain in clinically normal caprine neonates. Ultrasonographic examination was done on 12 day-old goat kids, transverse and sagittal transcranial scans were obtained...
متن کاملBirth asphyxia and associated factors among newborns delivered in Jimma zone public hospitals, Southwest Ethiopia: A cross-sectional study
Background & aim: Birth asphyxia is a serious clinical problem and a leading cause of neonatal mortality and morbidity worldwide. The majority of neonatal deaths arise in low- and middle-income countries. We sought to address birth asphyxia and its associated factors among newborns delivered in Jimma zone public hospitals, Southwest Ethiopia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 36...

Introdution: Seizure is the most common neurologic symptom of neonatal period and brain CT scan can be helpful in finding of its etiology. The purpose of present study was to evaluate brain CT scan findings of admitted neonates with clinical seizure and its correlation with clinical findings. Methods: In a retrospective descriptive study, medical records and brain CT scan findings of neonates ...
متن کاملThe Scottish perinatal neuropathology study: clinicopathological correlation in early neonatal deaths.
BACKGROUND A proportion of neonatal deaths from asphyxia have been shown to be associated with pre-existing brain injury. OBJECTIVES (a) To compare the epidemiology of infants displaying signs of birth asphyxia with those not showing signs; (b) to examine the neuropathology and determine if possible the timing of brain insult comparing asphyxiated with non-asphyxiated infants; (c) to compare ...
